“Petnames” or “Nicknames” at Work, It’s Not O.K.

If you are on the receiving end of a pet name or nickname at work, it’s pretty likely that you don’t like it or appreciate it. In fact according to a survey done by onepoll.com found that three quarters of women thought using pet names at work was “unacceptable.” These petnames are typically used in face-to-face interactions and not over email or work messaging systems. These terms typically make the person on the receiving end feels as though they are being spoken down to.

You would think that calling someone at work a name you might use to reference your romantic partner or children is obviously a bad idea, but that’s just not the case.

So if you happen to use petnames or nicknames at work, just stop. And instead use your coworkers actual name; you know, the one they probably introduced themselves to you by,
